Four independent designers from St. Vincent and the Grenadines are set to make a NY splash later this month.
The designers - Tamiko Brown, Shernicia Mayers, Kimon Baptiste and Karen De Freitas will show their Caribbean-inspired looks for the first time on US soil during Nolcha Fashion Week. The event is set for Wednesday, September 16th at the Bohemian National Hall at 321 E. 73rd Street in New York City.
Tami B Designs is the swimwear label created by designer Browne. Her innovative approach to the modern bikini has captured the attention of women who are looking for that island vibe. The designs are sexy, flirty & sophisticated. The fabrics are recycled, eco friendly & sustainable.
Mayers has been involved in the fashion industry from age of 11. Coming from a family of talented seamstresses, she learned from the best; her grandmother and mother were both dressmakers and under their tutelage, she made her first dress at 11 years old. Since then, she has continued in her craft to perfect it. At 15 years, she started her business and is developing her brand `Shernicia` which specializes in all aspects of fabric work, formal, bridal, casual and swim wear for male, female and children, interior decorating, soft furnishings and accessories.
Baptiste debuted into the world of Fashion and runway shows in December 1999 at the Fashion Caribbean show in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Baptise a former Miss St. Vincent and the Grenadines and a graduate of the University of the West Indies and has participated in numerous fashion shows including the Launch of the St. Kitts fashion week held at the Harlem School of Arts in New York, the Fashion has no Borders fashion show held in Toronto Canada, Islands of the World Fashion week held in the Bahamas and Miami Fashion week She has also designed winning gowns for many pageants in St. Vincent and the Caribbean. The Kimmystic.Clo 2010 collection is colorful, intense, energetic, fun, vibrant, and chic.
De Freitas launched her label Soka - a monogram for `So-Karen - at the tender age of 20. She displays a great deal of maturity for a self-taught designer and has been on the circuit for just under a year. Born and bred in St Vincent & the Grenadines, she is inspired by her natural surroundings, from the color palettes of the sky to the black and white sandy beaches of St Vincent. She uses her artistic roots and the observation of nature`s beauty to inspire ideas and develop her collections.
Her romanticized 2010 collection explores sensual fabrics in rich textures and colours of red and gold with soft palettes and hues of blush pinks, these avant-garde designs are for the less commercial. Inspired by the colonial influence of the French and African enslaves in the 1840`s, this collection shows Africa meeting Europe on the Caribbean islands of Martinique and St. Vincent. It is her interpretation of these meetings with the use of natural materials, such as cottons and burlap contrasting with the silks and laces against the leatherettes that reflects the contrast of these worlds colliding.
Nolcha has grown to become the platform for emerging and independent fashion talent to be educated, to network and to showcase their work on a global stage making a stamp worldwide for its resources, business advice and continually expanding tools.
